Design and 3D modelling - Wingsail yacht project.

A project with a Danish Sailor, development of a special kind of wingsail with a catamaran and a trimaran shape, that makes it ergonomically easier to sail a sailboat. The design has evolved over time and is more my design language. This project seeks investors.

Project introduced at the SMM in Hamburg (SMM‚ the worlds leading maritime trade fair at Hamburg Messe) in September 2017. With many postive reactions.

Theatre performance car

September 2017
Scenographer, Palle Steen -
To build up a car in 3D on a platform based on a Mercedes AMG roadster for a the- atre performance and being the centrepiece of the stage design. The concept was that the car could be split apart from each other during the act, and in the end of the story it would be in an accident and therefore had to crash.

The project stopped after the first phase, because calculations showed that the costs for producing the car exceeded the budget.

Cool plane concepts, flight concept, aviation design, Automotive Design Workshops, David Hilton, Cologne

Automotive Design Workshops • David Hilton • Cologne

In August 2010 I went for a five-day intensive sketching course, held by car designer David Hilton in Cologne, Germany. The first two days were quick sketch drawing methods. The last three days of the course were spent on developing one of the ideas we had sketched the first two days and then either build up the idea as a clay model or a 3D Alias model. I designed a single person jet seaplane. The product is a noisy product a little bid like jet skis. Most people hate them, but the user loves it.

Jet-powered seaplane. The project started with a simple sketch. The top picture is the original idea of the 3D model I made in Cologne. Sadly I could not open the last alias file from the course on my computer, due to some server coding and the rendering images I made down there could not be opened either on my computer. The top rendering is from a previous file, which I could open on my computer. I therefore build up a new model with better details.

April 2014 I decided to redesign the concept.

Aquila Racing Cars ApS

January 2014 Design competition.
Design a one seater racing car. I worked with Torben Poulsen Nygaard, where we had two weeks to design a concept. A proposal which was selected among the 7 finalist to improve the design.

At the next stage, we had 8 weeks to design a new and improved proposal.

Truck with no blind spots

February 2012
You cannot fix blind spots simply by new technology in old aged design. To solve the blind spots the truck design needs a new design.

Restyling of a former school 3D project

February 2012
I made the first illustrations in the early nineties, in Corel Draw.
The design was inspired by Walt Disney’s $crooge McDuck, whose limousines has the driver sitting outside.

The first 3D project at Coventry was to build up an idea we had and therefore I chose this concept.

In January 2012 I found the 3D file and chose to build up a new model, based on the same theme with a new design.

Golf cart

February 2012
An idea I got due to a Danish company who launched their idea of a the golf cart, but my view on it was that there was not much new about it compared to what there were already on the market of golf carts.

In 2008 I started to look what could be made better by looking at the golf carts that are out on the market. One of the details I think that is a problem at current golf carts is to fasten golfbags in the rear, which is often with some cheap materials on the cart. Furthermore I also looked at the ergonomics and playing with the idea that there should be able to sit 3 adults beside each other, therefore I came up with a circular bench instead of the straight benches that are on traditional golf carts.

Therefore my idea is that in the rear are integrated golfbags so you put the golf clubs into the car, plus in the rear there is a folding chair for a fourth player.

I have looked at the design concept several times, and improved details over time.

Jaguar E-type

January 2012
A redesigned school project. A second year school project, had to redesign a classic design. At the time, I chose the Jaguar E-type, where I at the time built up my idea into 3D. I therefore decided in late January 2012 to look at the 3D model again and chose to build a new simple 3D model up.

Fashion design meets transportation design

April 2010 a Brazilian fashion designer who lives in Copenhagen contacted me since he had a bike concept he wanted me to 3D model. Sadly the customer would not pay the first phase. The first reason because there was VAT on the invoice. Then he had all sorts of excuses for instance that he was rich and wealthy etc.

If you would like to read about the whole episode, send me an email and I will mail you the description.

Nordship Yachts

Nordship Yachts.
The projects with Nordship Yachts have given me a great reference, with two projects that have developed my 3D modelling skills.

May 09 • Nordship 360 DS.
The second 3D project with Nordship Yachts was to build up a new model in 3D over a very short time period. This yacht is a new design, but there were several details that are repeated from the previous model I have 3D modelled, which reduced my time a lot in building up the model. The new yacht has been published on Thursday 18 June 2009 over a press release. The Nordship 360 DS had its premiere in January 23 - 31, 2010 at the Düsseldorf 41st International Boat Show in Germany.

April 07 • Nordship 380 DS.
I did 3D modelling of a 38-footer yacht for the Danish luxury yacht company Nordship Yachts. The 3D work contributed to Nordship Yachts exceeding their sales projections by almost 100 % before any yachts were actually build.

Sideview renderings and a 4 day 3D modelling project

January 2006
It started with a side view sketch. I then decided to scan in the drawing and make some side view renderings from the simple sketch.

I wanted to practice shading and reflections seen from an object from the side. I think I used a day on it.

From one of the renderings I wanted to build up a quick 3D model. I wanted to use as lees days as possible to build up the model, I used 4 days on the 3D modelling.

Final major project • Replacing a South African icon

A little VW (bakkie) pickup to the South African market.

Although it is difficult to replace an icon, I believe it is necessary for Volkswagen South Africa to design a true and genuine VW bakkie. The major reasons being:

  • South Africa needs cheap vehicles. Some of VW's biggest competitors such as Opel and Ford have modern, but simple half ton bakkies.
  • The South African bakkie culture, allowing for transport of people and materials on the flat bed.
  • Volkswagen means “people's car” in German. If Volkswagen has to live up to its image of making a car for the people, it is my opinion Volkswagen needs to deliver what the people would like to have.
  • Volkswagen needs a car that can be repaired by the rural areas and in the bush.
  • The old A1 bakkie is an old fashioned design, but it does look classic compared with its competitors, and stands out from the crowd.
