Interior & product design | ILVA design competitionIn 2013, Torben Nyegaard Poulsen and I participated in ILVAs design competition with the goal of creating a furniture series that redefines modern interior design. Our vision was to strip the design language down to its essence and develop a cohesive collection that merges aesthetics, functionality, and adaptability. Some of the furniture pieces had already been designed before we heard about the competition. When we decided to participate, we expanded the collection by designing additional furniture and products to create a complete and cohesive series. With Scandinavian minimalism as our foundation, we focused on modular furniture that could be customized to fit various interior styles. We wanted to convey the idea that furniture is not just inventory—it is a fundamental part of a home’s identity. Our approach was to challenge conventional solutions and develop an innovative furniture series that merges functionality with a strong design identity. The concepts were designed using the 3D software Alias Studiotools and rendered in KeyShot, allowing us to refine the details and visualize the final aesthetic of each piece with high precision. |

The Roman ChairThis chair features an elegantly curved U-shaped timber frame, combining both the seat and armrests in one cohesive piece. The backrest is composed of two leather pieces, attached securely to the backs of the armrests. The legs are made of bent metal, fastened at the center. All chair legs are identical, simplifying production. The design concept was to create a stylish lounge chair with minimal components, making it affordable without compromising elegance.
Sofa | 2 x The Roman ChairBy placing two of these armchairs side by side, you can create a two-seater sofa. In this arrangement, the middle legs are removed, and the armrests are screwed together, resulting in a seamless and flexible seating solution. |

Coffee Table | Fjord TableThis coffee table features a 100 cm round tabletop with an optional 8 cm high edge. The legs are made from four L-shaped metal rods assembled at the center, allowing flexibility in both height and style. The design is classic and minimalist, offering versatile options that make it easy to produce and package.
Tea TableThe tea table shares the same design DNA as the dining chair. It consists of three parts: two identical side pieces that can serve as stools and a wooden tray in the middle that binds the design together, also usable independently.
Trinkets | Candle Holders/Vases/BowlsThe trinket series includes candle holders, vases, and bowls, all sharing a cohesive design style. The candle holders are versatile for both taper and tealight candles. The design is simple and timeless, with cylindrical shapes featuring a central circular detail across all items.
Wall Clock/ArtThis wall accessory doubles as a clock and an art piece. Its simple design makes it a discreet yet stylish element, adding elegance to any wall.

Key takeaways from the ILVA design competitionOur participation in the ILVA design competition was an exciting opportunity to explore new design ideas and further refine our approach to modular furniture. The process allowed us to merge functionality, aesthetics, and flexibility into a cohesive design line, creating a strong connection between our previous concepts and new innovations. By utilizing Alias Studiotools and KeyShot, we were able to visualize and fine-tune our designs down to the smallest detail. Our goal was to develop a furniture series that not only fits seamlessly into contemporary homes but also adapts to future needs. Our approach was to challenge conventional solutions and develop an innovative furniture series that merges functionality with a strong design identity. The competition reinforced the importance of thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries of modern furniture design. This project has provided us with valuable experience that we will carry forward into future design endeavors. |
