Reimagining Trucks – A Vision for the Future of Urban Design

At Roug Design, I have worked on truck concept development with a strong focus on ergonomics and safety combined with innovative design principles.

My approach to commercial vehicle design emphasizes functionality, optimizing driver’s visibility, and design solutions that reduce blind spots in order to improve road safety. The result is a safe and innovative truck concept, reflecting my own design thoughts on truck styling and representing a groundbreaking vision for the future of the truck industry.

From Idea to Innovative Truck Design
In an era of increasing urban traffic and the focus on cyclist and pedestrian safety, the idea to eliminate truck blind spots was born. Back in 2006, I started working on a radical new design that rethought the truck’s overall structure.

Solving Blind Spots – Inspired by Helicopters
To address blind spot issues, I drew inspiration from helicopters. Helicopters feature large, wraparound windows that give pilots better visibility forward and downward. I applied this concept to the truck cabin, designing multiple glass panels that provide a broader field of vision for the driver.

From Sketches to 3D Models
Beginning with hand-drawn sketches in 2006, I progressed to building a 3D model in Alias in 2008. This model focused on form and function. In February 2012, I redesigned the truck in Alias StudioTools, creating a streamlined version with aerodynamic and safety-oriented features. Inspired by nature, the design also takes shapes reminiscent of insects, such as ants.

A Forward-Thinking Vision for Urban Environments
The result is an innovative concept that blends function, aesthetics, and safety. By improving visibility and ergonomics, it addresses blind spots and the interaction with vulnerable road users. This design is a vision for how trucks can better integrate into future urban environments with a focus on safety and aesthetics.

Early sketches and 3D model – the path to a new truck design

In 2006, I started developing the idea of a reimagined truck design, where blind spots would be addressed through the shape of the cab itself. The inspiration came from helicopter cockpits, which provide better visibility for pilots – a concept I transferred to a truck.

By 2008, the project took a step forward as I built an early 3D model in Alias. This model focused on functionality and solving urban traffic challenges. The design represented a fresh approach to integrating trucks into city environments – not through added technology, but through smarter and more thoughtful design.
